Estuary Management

Rooiels boasts one of the most pristine estuaries in the Western Cape.  Connecting the Rooiels River and the Atlantic Ocean, it’s an important nursery for fish, and a feeding ground for many migratory birds and other species.

In 2023, Cape Nature published an Estuarine Management Plan for the estuary which was signed off by Minister Anton Bredell. The plan outlines a vision for the future of the estuary.

To accomplish this, some priorities were set, such as conserving biodiversity and estuary system health, managing activities and development which affect the estuary, and preventing disasters.

The Conservancy will play an active role in the monitoring activities outlined in the plan. We are creating an Estuary sub-forum which will work with Cape Nature and the Kogelberg Marine Working Group to put an operations plan in place to enable scientific monitoring of the estuary.
