Alien Vegetation

Invasive alien vegetation is one of the greatest threats to our natural environment. These aggressive, non-native plants spread rapidly, overwhelming the delicate balance of endemic flora that defines our landscape. They also fuel hotter, more intense fires than indigenous fynbos, increasing the danger to people, property, and nature, and making wildfires far harder to contain.

The Conservancy’s endeavours to control the spread of alien plants include the monthly Rooiels Hack and regular “Identify an Alien” features in the Compass newsletter.

Recently, a joint task team from the Rooiels Conservancy, Hangklip Hardcore Hackers, Betty’s Bay Hack and Kogelberg Biosphere Company surveyed the smallholdings between Rooiels and Pringle Bay, revealing dense stands of alien invasives taking over in some areas. The team would like to work with landowners to tackle and maintain the problem. The Kogelberg Biosphere is also leading an effort to have the Overstrand Municipality enact enforceable alien plant regulations.
