Some history and background about RERA.

What has RERA ever achieved?

Over the years, RERA has been at the heart of imortant victories for Rooiels and its people. One of our proudest achievements was successfully taking legal action to stop military activities in the Buffels dam areas – a vital step inprotecting the peace and natural beauty of our environment. We also played a key role in preventing the proposed routing of the R44 along the coast, preserving the unspoiled character of our shoreline and safeguarding sensitive ecosystems. Alongside these milestones, RERA has championed countless local initiatives, co-ordinating fire and storm response efforts to protect endangered fynbos and ensuring reliable basic services for our community.

How does RERA collaborate with other organisations in Rooiels?

In Rooiels, we aim at nurturing a community spirit— and therefore love teaming up with other local champions to make a bigger impact. We work together with the Rooiels Security Association (RESA) to protect our local security and with the Rooiels Conservancy to preserve our pristine environment. We are proud of, and support Rooiels Outreach in their charitable endeavours as well as the Rooiels Medics team that help ensure no one gets left behind. And of course, we share good times and community events with the Boat Club because life in Rooiels is about having fun along the way.

Ordinary members - what are your rights and benefits?

As an Ordinary Member of RERA, you’re an important voice in the future of Rooiels! You have the right to vote at our Annual General Meeting, stand for election to the RERA committee, and weigh in on the decisions that affect our village. You’ll get regular updates on local issues, service alerts, and community events, plus you’ll be part of a dedicated network of Rooielsers working together to keep our little piece of paradise thriving. It’s your village, and your say matters.

Associate members - what are your rights and benefits?

Even if you don’t have formal voting rights, as an Associate Member you’re still a vital part of the RERA family. You’ll stay in the loop with regular updates, community news, and important alerts, and you’re always welcome to join in on Exco meetings, and contribute to consultative processes, events, and volunteer initiatives. Associate Members add valuable ideas, energy, and heart to our village, helping to shape Rooiels’ future alongside Ordinary Members. Whether you’re a family member of ratepayers, or a tenant residing in Rooiels, this is your chance to stay connected and help protect the
place we all care about.

When and how does RERA consult with members and the community?

RERA believes in open, transparent decision-making. Before making big decisions like land use changes, legal action, environmental matters, or major spending, we consult with our members, ratepayers, and the community. This is because we believe in and will encourage constructive dialogue to achieve common ground. Depending on the issue, this might involve public notices, focused discussions, or quick electronic polls. If needed, a formal vote by Ordinary Members will settle the matter.

How does RERA communicate with members and the outside world?

RERA values open, transparent communication. We publish our meeting notes to members and the village so all can know what’s going on around them. Members can receive notice of Executive Committee meeting dates and agendas if they want to attend, and we keep this website up to date. Information regarding land use applications are made publicly
available both online and in due course, on a physical noticeboard in the Central Business District. Members can also request access to formal communications sent or received by the Executive Committee on behalf of the Association. It’s all about keeping Rooiels informed, connected, and engaged.
